Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
The National Labor College-George Meany Center will conduct “Rail Workers Hazardous Materials Training” programs May 7-12, June 4-9 and July 16-21 at the George Meany campus in Silver Spring, Md.
Funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and conducted in cooperation with seven rail labor unions, the program is open to railroad employees and local responders (such as firemen and police officers). In fall, the college — which has provided the program for more than 14 years and trained more than 19,500 rail workers — obtained federal funding to continue offering courses for the next five years.
Classroom and field training courses address Occupational Safety and Health Administration and U.S. Department of Transportation haz-mat transportation requirements. Courses include haz-mat recognition and identification, chemical properties and health effects, and workplace/community emergency response plans. The college recently expanded the curriculum to include training on haz-mat disasters — such as those involving terrorism or natural events — and the transportation of radioactive materials.
For more information, visit the course Web site at www.hazmatgmc.org, call 301-439-2440, send a fax to 301-628-0165 or email crodgers@nationallaborcollege.edu.
