Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
On May 15, Norfolk Southern Corp. will expand its “1 or 3” free time intermodal equipment storage program to all intermodal terminals. Designed to tie terminal free time to service performance, the program has helped NS improve terminal throughput and provide shippers more time to reschedule drayage appointments if a train is delayed since the Class I launched 1 or 3 at its Bethintermodal facility in Bethlehem, Pa., in July 2005.
NS offers one day of free storage time (the day of notification and following business day) if the railroad grounds equipment no later than three hours after the published scheduled availability; and three days of free time (the day of notification and following three business days) if the Class I grounds a load more than three hours after the published scheduled availability.
The program applies to domestic equipment, and private trailers and containers. NS recently enhanced an intermodal drayage application on AccessNS to enable shippers to electronically manage their shipments under 1 or 3 storage rules.
