Today, Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (GWI) reported that carloads from continuing operations in December totaled 70,555 units, up 14.2 percent compared with December 2007’s total. In the fourth quarter, GWI’s traffic jumped 17.2 percent to 224,808 units.
However, the company’s “same-railroad” traffic — which excludes carloads carried by railroads acquired within the past 12 months — decreased 11.2 percent in December and 8.8 percent in the fourth quarter vs. 2007 totals. Declining metals, lumber and forest products, pulp and paper, and coal, coke and ores traffic in certain regions primarily drove down carloadings in the periods, GWI said.
The company owns and operates 63 regionals and short lines in the United States, Canada, Australia and the Netherlands, and owns a minority interest in a Bolivian railroad.
