Today, Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (GWI) reported November carloads totaling 71,861 units, up 14.1 percent compared with November 2009 volume.
Farm and food product carloads jumped 43.8 percent to 9,020 units, primarily because of strong demand in the Australia Region; chemical and plastics carloads climbed 25.5 percent to 4,986 units; pulp and paper carloads rose 11 percent to 7,206 units; and coal, coke and ores carloads increased 9.6 percent to 18,140 units, primarily because of higher volumes in the Illinois Region. In addition, “other” traffic soared 20.6 percent to 7,691 units primarily due to increased overhead coal traffic in the New York/Ohio/Pennsylvania Region.
GWI owns and operates 63 regionals and short lines in the United States, Canada, Australia and Netherlands.
