CSXT completes annual coal line trackwork
advertisement
Earlier this week, CSX Transportation capped off its annual track maintenance work along a key Appalachian coal line used by as many as 50 trains daily.
About 1,000 workers completed the $20 million project in 10 days along track in Kentucky, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia. Work included installing new rail and more than 133,000 ties, resurfacing 150 miles of track, and performing maintenance on seven tunnels and four bridges.
CSXT schedules the project each year when many coal mines typically close for a summer break. If the trackwork were scheduled during normal curfew conditions, it could take up to 27 weeks to complete and significantly disrupt service, CSXT officials said in a prepared statement.
