CSXT, UTU agree to tentative contract covering yardmasters

CSX Transportation and United Transportation Union Aug. 1 reached a tentative agreement that would cover yardmasters, who aren't covered by national negotiations (except for health care), until Dec. 31, 2004, according to a UTU-prepared statement.
CSXT and union officials believe a "non-traditional" approach (such as Interest-based bargaining, which is used to explore mutual interests and needs, according to National Mediation Board) was crucial to producing an agreement containing alternative compensation provisions and productivity improvements.
The agreement calls for yardmasters to receive an $800 bonus ($400 within 60 days; $400 within six months); a 4 percent wage increase retroactive to July 1; a 2.5 percent wage increase July 1, 2003; and a 3 percent wage increase July 1, 2004.
UTU plans Aug. 7 to present the agreement to members for ratification; results would be announced Aug. 29.
