The value of freight moved by rail across North American borders in May was $17.7 billion, up 11.1% from $16 billion moved in the same month in 2025, according to the latest TransBorder Freight Data report from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS).
By transportation mode, railroads carried the second-highest value of transborder freight in the month, but also had the lowest year-over-year increase in value hauled.
Trucks moved the highest value of freight in the month, carrying $99.7 billion worth of freight, up 15% year-over-year. Water vessels carried $11.1 billion worth of freight, up 37.7%; pipelines moved $10.3 billion, up 24%; and air craft moved $7.1 billion, up 53.6%.
The total value of all North American transborder freight moved in May was $153.4 billion, up 16.1% from May 2025, according to the BTS report.
Freight railroads hauled $8.6 billion worth of goods between the United States and Canada in May, with Detroit and Port Huron, Michigan, and International Falls, Minnesota, being the top rail connection spots. Railroads moved $9.1 billion worth of goods between the United States and Mexico in May. The top exchange points for railroads at the southern U.S. border are Laredo, Eagle Pass and El Paso, Texas.
The transborder freight data program provides monthly and annual data on North American cross-border freight activity, detailing the value of U.S. imports and exports with Canada and Mexico by mode of transportation, commodity and geography, BTS officials said. The data helps inform infrastructure planning, trade corridor studies and logistics research.
