BTS: Transborder freight-by-rail value fell nearly 20% in January

The value of North American transborder freight moved by rail fell 19.6% to $12.2 billion in January compared to January 2025's value, the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reported yesterday.

The value of freight moved in January 2026 by all modes of transportation between the United States, Canada and Mexico totaled $126.9 billion, down 5.5% compared to January 2025, according to a BTS press release.

The value of freight moved by rail in January between the United States and Canada totaled $5.8 billion, while the value of cargo moved via rail between the United States and Mexico that month reached $6.4 billion.

Measured by the value of goods, the top rail connection ports for U.S. freight flows with Canada are Detroit, Port Huron and International Falls; while Laredo, Eagle Pass and El Paso are the top U.S. rail connection ports with Mexico.
