Add BNSF Railway Co. to the list of railroads participating in e-RAILSAFE, an industry-wide safety and security program that calls for screening and tracking railroad contractors and their employees, and providing credentials.
BNSF recently contacted 582 contractors and processed more than 21,000 service providers. The Class I plans to audit each contractor that performs work on BNSF property.
In 2005, e-VERIFILE.COM Inc. developed e-RAILSAFE after several Class Is selected the risk assessment consultant to augment safety and security at railroad facilities. Administered by e-VERIFILE.COM, the program provides training in security awareness, criminal background investigation and photo I.D. badges. Canadian Pacific Railway joined e-RAILSAFE in June.
The "extra layer of protection" will help prevent illegal or terrorist activities on rail properties, BNSF said.
