BMWE, IBB members vote down merger proposal

Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes (BMWE) and International Brotherhood of Boilermakers (IBB) officials Sept. 24 saw their combined-organization hopes cast aside by union members, who voted 55 percent against and 45 percent in favor of the proposed merger.

BMWE and IBB officials plan in the near future to release more information about the vote and what, if any, their next step would be.

Had members ratified the proposal, the merged organization would've represented about 150,000 American and Canadian skilled tradesmen in six industrial sectors: railroading, manufacturing, stove/metal, shipbuilding/repair, cement and construction.
