Architect to unveil World Trade Center Transportation Hub design

On Jan. 22, architect Santiago Calatrava expects to publicly present the design for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s World Trade Center Transportation Hub.
The design is being developed by Downtown Design Partnership, a joint venture of DMJM+Harris and STV Group Inc., and Calatrava.
The $2 billion transportation hub is expected to feature a glass and steel grand point of arrival; permanent Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) terminal to serve passengers between New Jersey and lower Manhattan; pedestrian connections to improve PATH, ferry and subway access across lower Manhattan; and natural lighting on PATH platforms 60 feet below street level.
"[The hub] will create a new grand civic space for lower Manhattan, carrying natural light down to the platforms," said Gov. George Pataki in a prepared statement.
PANYNJ currently is completing the environmental review process for the center, which is scheduled to open in 2006. In November, the authority opened a temporary PATH station — the final piece of a project designed to restore service between New Jersey and lower Manhattan after Sept. 11, 2001.
