Amtrak's three California-supported routes each posted ridership gains in August.
Ridership on the San Diego-Los Angeles-San Luis Obispo Pacific Surfliner totaled 313,570, a 9.5 percent increase compared with August 2007's total. For the fourth-consecutive month, the Pacific Surfliner carried more passengers than Amtrak's Acela Express. The Pacific Surfliner currently is the second-busiest intercity passenger-rail route in the country, attracting 2.7 million passengers so far in the current fiscal year.
In addition, the San Jose-San Francisco/Oakland-Sacramento-Auburn Capitol Corridor posted a 21.3 percent ridership surge, registering 158,309 passengers — a new August record and the second-highest monthly total ever. The route is Amtrak's third-busiest, registering 1.5 million passengers to date.
Finally, the San Francisco/Oakland-Sacramento-Bakersfield San Joaquins boosted ridership 27.5 percent, posting 96,253 passengers. The corridor, the nation's fifth-busiest, has attracted 873,767 riders to date.
