Amtrak to hike fares, expand reserved service

advertisement

On Sept. 20, Amtrak will raise fares between 5 percent and 7 percent to offset higher fuel costs — which have risen 40 percent during the past year — and compensate for other expenses.

Fares will increase an average of $3 nationally and $4 in the Northeast Corridor. In addition, Amtrak will raise monthly and 10-trip ticket fares to reduce discounts. Monthly tickets will be discounted 50 percent compared with the regular one-way fare; 10-trip tickets will be discounted 20 percent.

Amtrak also will expand its all-reserved service to most Northeast trains, enabling the national passenger railroad to adjust train capacity to meet demand.
