Architects unveil design proposals for new San Francisco transit center

After an eight-month international design competition, three architects and their partner developers presented concepts for a new Transbay Transit Center and adjoining tower in San Francisco at a special Transbay Joint Powers Authority board meeting held Monday.

The facility will be served by eight transit systems, including Caltrain, San Francisco Municipal Railway, Bay Area Rapid Transit and the future California high-speed rail service. The area surrounding the transit center will be redeveloped to include housing and retail space.

The authority reviewed proposals from Richard Rogers Partnership and Forest City Enterprises with MacFarlane Partners; Skidmore Owings and Merrill and Rockefeller Group Development Corp.; and Pell Clark Pelli Architects and Hines. Members of the public commented on each of the designs.

Now, the three proposals will be evaluated by a nine-member panel. The board will select an architect/developer team at its Sept. 20 meeting. The first phase of construction might begin in two years.
