Supplemental federal bill provides another $100 million for transit and rail security; House committee to review FY2008 security measure

President Bush recently signed into law the FY2007 Emergency Wartime Supplemental Appropriations bill, which includes $100 million in additional funding for public transit and rail security.

The bill brings the total FY2007 transit and rail security funding to $275 million, an 83 percent increase compared with FY2006’s level, according to the American Public Transportation Association. Now, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will determine how to allocate the additional funds.

And more federal security funding might be on the way. Next week, the House Appropriations Committee is expected to act on the FY2008 security appropriations bill, which includes $400 million for transit and rail security, according to the association. The appropriations subcommittee approved the bill last week.
