STB creates advisory committee to keep tabs on rail-transported energy product issues

As more ethanol and biofuels move by rail in the coming years, the Surface Transportation Board (STB) will keep a close eye on issues affecting the emerging traffic thanks to a new advisory committee.

Yesterday, the board announced it formed a Rail Energy Transportation Advisory Committee (RETAC) to provide advice and guidance to STB members, and serve as a forum for discussing rail-transported energy products, including ethanol, biofuels and coal.

“The STB is establishing RETAC to provide independent, candid policy advice to the agency and to foster open, effective communication among affected interests on issues such as rail performance, capacity constraints, infrastructure planning and development, and effective coordination among suppliers, railroads and energy-resource users,” said STB Chairman Charles Nottingham in a prepared statement.

Currently, the STB is soliciting public suggestions for RETAC membership candidates.
