FRA, USDOT dole out grants for intermodal terminal and transportation research


The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) recently awarded a $322,595 grant to the Washington State Department of Transportation to help fund the development of a short-haul intermodal facility in Quincy.

The terminal is designed to handle containerized agricultural products shipped to and from the ports of Seattle and Tacoma. The department will use grant proceeds to purchase loading and unloading equipment, a switcher and five truck chassis.

Meanwhile, FRA parent the U.S. Department of Transportation recently awarded more than $26 million to 20 University Transportation Centers.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, City University of New York, Pennsylvania State University, Iowa State University, North Dakota State University, Texas A&M, and universities of Tennessee, Wisconsin, Texas, California and Washington each received $1.72 million. Rutgers University obtained $1.64 million; Marshall University received $1.56 million; San Jose State University and the universities of Central Florida, Southern California, Missouri-Rolla, Idaho, Alabama and Arkansas each got $860,000; and the University of South Florida was awarded $271,000.
