KCS honors chemical shippers' haz-mat safety efforts

Kansas City Southern March 8 presented its first-ever Hazardous Accidental Release Prevention (HARP) awards to recognize chemical shippers' safety, environmental-protection and regulatory-compliance efforts when shipping hazardous materials last year.
KCS, which in 2001 handled 55,000 hazardous-chemical carloads, recognized 59 chemical shippers with HARP awards in two categories: 2001 Excellence Awards for Non-Accidental Releases (NAR) for shipments exceeding 5,000 loads, and for those between 100 and 4,999 loads; and 2001 Improvement Awards for shippers that demonstrated significant safety-process improvements to prevent NAR.
KCS presented Georgia Gulf Corp. a 2001 Excellence Award in the 5,000-plus loads category, and 54 shippers an award at the 100- to 4,999-load level.
The railroad also named International Paper, Penreco, Premcor Refining Group Inc. and Reagent Chemical 2001 Improvement Award winners.
