Jamboree times three for CSXT


After successfully completing a $17 million, five-day Jamboree on two mainlines in early July, CSX Transportation is ready to take on three smaller-scale track maintenance blitzes in March and April.
The Class I plans to conduct a four-day Jamboree — condensing several weeks worth of track maintenance into days — March 17-21 on its Flomaton, Ala.-to-New Orleans mainline.
Eleven tie and rail teams — a total of more than 700 workers — will work 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. installing 19 miles of rail and more than 56,000 wood ties, surfacing 64 track miles, and rebuilding or repairing four bridges.
Under typical working and curfew conditions, it would take the railroad nearly two months to complete the trackwork and more than two years to finish the bridge repairs.
CSXT plans to enforce a nightly 12-hour traffic curfew from Montgomery, Ala., to Flomaton.
"As we did last year, there is a tremendous amount of coordination going on
to ensure that there is no or minimal disruption to our customers and Amtrak," says CSXT spokeswoman Susan Keegan. "We’re even coordinating with the [U.S.] Coast Guard with some of the bridge work."
CSXT also plans to conduct a second, seven-day Jamboree (tentatively March 24-31) between Birmingham and Montgomery involving four tie teams installing 48,000 wood ties — a project that typically would take four weeks.
A third, seven-day Jamboree (tentatively the first week in April) on CSXT’s Fitzgerald Subdivision in south/central Georgia would involve four tie teams installing more than 40,000 wood ties, saving the railroad five weeks in maintenance time.
