RAILINC, RailAmerica forge short-line transportation-management software deal

RAILINC Corp. and RailAmerica Inc. Oct. 12 reached a long-term information services agreement, under which RAILINC will purchase from RailAmerica an exclusive license for the holding company's International Networking and Freight Operations (INFO) software. RAILINC then would Web-enable the short line transportation-management system for industry-wide use.
RAILINC plans to rebrand INFO as Command, part of a suite of Web-based software called RailSync™ that RAILINC launched Oct. 5.
Command is designed to support small roads' yard, train and industrial rail operations by enabling short lines to perform Electronic Data Interchange and TRAIN II® interline-tracing messaging, report internal events and conduct standing track inventory. Command also includes links to back-end systems, enabling short lines to better manage financial and operational data.
Under agreement terms, RailAmerica would convert its short lines to Command — once it's Web-enabled — using the system at preferable rates for at least 12 years.
RailAmerica over several years developed the INFO system for its own use, designed to address short-line transportation and information system needs, and incorporate the holding company's operational expertise.
