BNSF boots up easier Intranet access

During the past few years, Class Is have been tweaking their Web sites to increase customers' easier-to-do-business-with curve. Now, Burlington Northern Santa Fe is doing the same thing for employees with its Intranet portal.

The Class I recently launched "BNSF Remote Access Gateway," a site (https://employee.bnsf.com) designed to enable employees to access the railroad's Intranet from any computer or PC instead of solely a network computer.

Through employee surveys, BNSF learned workers wanted an easier way to review policies, read company news, and check or update personal information.

With any computer and Web browser, and a BNSF user ID and password, employees now can view BNSF policies; conduct a search to locate other worker's phone numbers, titles and locations; read publication and news archives; browse BNSF departments; find various benefit providers; obtain information on training and work-development opportunities; and click on employee-discount links.

"Providing this self-service function is a big benefit for employees, with the emphasis on convenience," said Jim Gordon, director of internal eBusiness, in a prepared statement.

Workers also can access "Employee Online," a self-service Intranet site designed to enable employees to update personal information, create an emergency-contact list, check electronic paystubs, purchase U.S. savings bonds, change tax-withholding status, view 401(k) and W-2 information, and read job descriptions.
