Rail News: Rail Industry Trends

AAR issues 2011 edition of statistical reference book

Yesterday, the Association of American Railroads (AAR) released the 2011 edition of Railroad Facts, a statistical reference book for the rail industry.

The more than 80-page publication includes industry facts and statistics for 2010, as well as historical data on various aspects of railroading, including financials, operations, plant and equipment, employment and compensation, fuel consumption and costs. Railroad Facts also provides a profile of each major U.S. Class I, Amtrak, major Canadian railroads and large Mexican railways.

The latest edition notes that in 2010, rail traffic began to recover from 2009’s recession-related decreases, which helped railroads bring equipment back into service and hire workers. Although their revenue fell below 2008’s record levels, Class Is budgeted $9.8 billion for capital expenditures in 2010 to expand infrastructure and purchase equipment, the book states.

Copies of Railroad Facts can be purchased online at at a cost of $5 for AAR members and $20 for non-members.
