DHS to install container scanners at U.S. borders and points abroad

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recently awarded a $33 million contract to Science Applications International Corp. (SAIC) to implement cargo-scanning technology at U.S. borders and abroad.

SAIC will provide its VACIS® P7500 X-ray inspection system to scan containers for weapons, explosives and other materials. The VACIS system is designed to produce high-resolution digital images of a container's contents and can scan up to 150 containers per hour. The system supports DHS’ Secure Freight Initiative.

SAIC will manufacture the systems at its plant near San Diego, and deliver units through the rest of 2007 and throughout 2008.
