In March, the Transportation Services Index (TSI) reached 100.4, up 1.1 percent from February’s level and 2.2 percent from March 2009’s count — the first March-over-March increase in three years, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS).

March’s Freight TSI of 97.8 rose 0.9 percent from February’s level, marking the third consecutive month-over-month gain. The index also increased 2.6 percent compared with March 2009’s Freight TSI. However, the index remains below the March level of all previous years since 1997, BTS said.

March’s Passenger TSI of 109.5 rose 1.6 percent from February’s level and 0.9 percent on a year-over-year basis.

In the first quarter, the TSI rose 1.5 percent, Freight TSI increased 1.6 percent — only the sixth quarterly gain in the past 20 quarters — and Passenger TSI went up 1.2 percent vs. first-quarter 2009.
