Pennsylvania politicians honor AAR, others for giving veterans a lift with 'Liberty Limited' train

Pennsylvania’s House of Representatives recently honored the Association of American Railroads (AAR), U.S. Army War College Foundation and two individuals for supporting military personnel wounded in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

The House issued a resolution recognizing the AAR for co-sponsoring “The Liberty Limited” train, which in 2005 and 2006 carried wounded veterans from Walter Reed Army Hospital and the Bethesda Naval Hospital to the Army-Navy football game in Philadelphia. Each veteran received gourmet meals on the train, a seat on the 50-yard line and a gift bag.

The resolution also recognizes Vivian and Bennett Levin, who came up with the idea for the train, provided their own locomotives and historic rail cars, arranged the loan of 15 additional privately owned cars and obtained the foundation’s backing.

“The railroad industry has a long history of providing support for the military, going back to the Civil War, [and] that support continues today,” said AAR President and Chief Executive Officer Ed Hamberger in a prepared statement. “Many of the weapons, tanks and other motorized vehicles currently being used in Iraq and Afghanistan were delivered to port by U.S. freight railroads.”
