Biodiesel distributor to tap intermodal connections at Connecticut port

Later this month, biodiesel producer and distributor Innovation Fuels plans to open a biodiesel operation at a New Haven, Conn., port terminal.

Intermodal connections in the area will enable the company to position itself as a biodiesel distributor for the region, said Paul Niznik, Innovation Fuels’ vice president of strategic operations, in a prepared statement. The company will receive biodiesel by barge from its Newark, N.J., production plant and ship it by rail via the Providence and Worcester Railroad Co., and by truck via Interstates 91 and 95, he said.

"We can easily serve all of New England," said Niznik, adding that the company will move about 1 million gallons of biodiesel monthly.

Port of New Haven Executive Director Judi Sheiffele plans to lobby the state to apply for federal stimulus dollars to help the New Haven Port Authority fund the addition of several rail spurs to private terminals.

"I think it is the future of our port for businesses to avail themselves of the intermodal connections of rail, water and highway," she said.
