KCSR, Texas DOT to explore line relocation options

The Kansas City Southern Railway Co. (KCSR) and Texas Department of Transportation recently agreed to jointly investigate options for relocating the railroad’s lines that run through El Campo and portions of Victoria.

KCSR will begin preliminary engineering for proposed bypasses around both communities. The railroad currently is rebuilding the old Southern Pacific line between Rosenberg and Victoria.

The Texas DOT will seek state funding for relocating the lines to rural areas, which will reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality, boost safety and expand the communities’ economic opportunities, the DOT said.

“By working together from the beginning on project planning and engineering, we can make sure that all parties are pulling in the same direction and reduce the likelihood of unforeseen issues down the road,” said Warren Erdman, executive vice president of corporate affairs for KCSR parent Kansas City Southern, in an item posted on the “KCS News” Web site.
