The University of Denver's Intermodal Transportation Institute (ITI) and National Center for Intermodal Transportation are sponsoring a two-day training program next month to educate public transportation agency personnel about the importance of the freight sector to the nation's overall transportation system and economic welfare.

To be held Oct. 13-15 at the University of Denver's HRTM Building, "Intermodal Freight Transportation and the Public Planning Process" will feature presentations by executives from railroads, transit agencies, trucking firms, maritime companies and intercity transportation providers on the challenges of creating a "truly intermodal" transportation system. Topics include: how public investment in the nation's transportation system will benefit freight movements; what are the most-effective interface strategies between public- and private-sector interests; and how to get freight stakeholders interested in the transportation planning process to maximize an intermodal transportation network.

The event also will include a presentation by Panama Canal Authority Chief Executive Officer Alberto Alemán on the Panama Canal Expansion Program.

"Given that freight transportation has been growing considerably due to increasing volumes of international trade, our transportation planning agencies at the federal, state, and local levels need to be more knowledgeable about how freight moves and what can be done specifically to accommodate an interconnected intermodal transportation system," said Andrew Goetz, a professor and member of ITI's faculty, in a prepared statement.
