Amtrak registers ridership spike in Heartland Corridor

Late last week, Amtrak announced record monthly system-wide ridership in July. Now, the national intercity passenger railroad is touting significant ridership increases on its Heartland Flyer service between Oklahoma City, Okla., and Fort Worth, Texas.

During a 10-month period ending July 31, daily ridership rose more than 17 percent to 67,141. In July, ridership shot up 40 percent to 11,721 compared with July 2007's total.
Amtrak operates the Heartland Flyer under contract with the Oklahoma and Texas departments of transportation. The railroad currently is studying service additions in the two states at the direction of the DOTs. Later this year, Amtrak expects to complete a report evaluating service to and from Tulsa. Next year, the railroad plans to submit a report to TexDOT analyzing service between Austin and San Antonio.
