LACMTA wins top prize in APTA's Rail Rodeo

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA) won the Rail Transit Team Achievement Award at the 16th Annual American Public Transportation Association International Rail Rodeo, which was held Saturday in conjunction with the 2008 APTA Rail Conference in San Francisco.

The team award is given to the system that has the highest combined score between the rail operator and maintainer teams. Eighty-one contestants from 20 rail systems competed in the rodeo.

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency — which is hosting this year’s conference — took first place in the operator’s competition, which measures train operation skills, and contestants’ knowledge of safety regulations, train equipment and right-of-way rules. LACMTA took second place and the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority placed third.

In the maintainer’s competition — which judges participants’ ability to troubleshoot maintenance problems — LACMTA won first place for the second year in a row. Bay Area Rapid Transit took second place and Metro St. Louis, third.
