Houston METRO, FTA officials discuss project funding

Earlier this week, officials from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority of Harris County, Texas (METRO) and city of Houston met in Washington, D.C., with Federal Transit Administrator James Simpson, FTA Deputy Administrator Sherry Little and Texas congressmen to discuss the agency’s upcoming projects.

METRO is trying to obtain federal funding support for its North and Southeast light-rail lines. The 5.2-mile North Corridor would run from the existing University of Houston-Downtown station to the Northline Transit Center. The 6.1-mile Southeast Corridor would run from downtown Houston to Palm Center.

The parties agreed to try to sign a Full Funding Grant Agreement for the projects by the end of the year and work together better to coordinate activities. METRO officials also agreed to provide FTA with the information it needs to certify the projects’ completion.
