FRA grants $679,000 for advanced train control development project

The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) recently awarded a $679,000 grant to the Railroad Research Foundation of Washington, D.C., to continue developing an advanced train control system.

Developed as part of the North American Joint Positive Train Control Project, the system is designed to help prevent train collisions, reduce the likelihood of speed-related derailments and protect track workers.

Train control will enable passenger trains to travel at 110 mph between Chicago and St. Louis. The project is a joint effort between the FRA, Association of American Railroads, Union Pacific Railroad and Illinois Department of Transportation.
