From one new start to another: Former Metro Transit execs to take on Phoenix light-rail project

Phoenix’s Valley Metro Rail will rely on the new start expertise of two executives to help build its Central Phoenix/East Valley light-rail line. The agency recently named former Metro Transit employees Joe Marie and Vicki Barron director of operations and maintenance, and director of design and construction, respectively.

At Metro Transit, the execs helped launch Minneapolis’ Hiawatha line, which opened last summer.

With more than 20 years’ public transportation industry experience, Marie will be responsible for overseeing the Valley Metro’s system operations and maintenance, including testing and start up. He previously served as assistant general manager of Metro Transit.

Barron will oversee the light-rail construction, as well as all aspects of civil, structural, architectural and systems design. She previously served as design-build project manager for the Hiawatha light-rail project.

Scheduled to open in December 2008, Valley Metro’s 19.6-mile, 27-station line will connect the cities of Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa, Ariz., and serve Sky Harbor Airport, Arizona State University, Papago Park Center, the Civic Plaza Convention Center, Bank One ballpark, America West Arena and Sun Devil Stadium.
