Allegheny County port authority obtains state funds, resolves budget shortfall

The Port Authority of Allegheny County has postponed plans to increase base fares to $2 and cut service on most routes. Late last month, Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell announced a plan to provide additional interim funding for public transit agencies.

The funding plan will provide $68 million in new federal highway funds for the port authority and Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority, which would receive $25.3 million and $42.7 million, respectively.

In fiscal-year 2005, the port authority was facing a $30 million budget shortfall. In December, the state provided the agency $4.7 million in interim funding.
