CTA to rehabilitate Howard Station

The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) recently awarded a $56.7 million contract to Chicago-based James McHugh Construction Co. to rehabilitate Howard Station on the Red Line.

The project includes renovating the station house and platform areas; upgrading communications, electrical and lighting systems; making the station handicapped accessible; and creating a new entrance on the south end of the station, providing access to platforms and the parking garage.

The rehabbed station also will feature new benches, signs, bike racks, wind breaks and canopies.

James McHugh will construct new facilities on the second floor of the station house for the Red Line rail operations and CTA maintenance departments.

Scheduled to begin in spring 2006 and be complete in 2009, the project will be funded by the Regional Transportation Authority and CTA bonds.
