Amtrak posts ridership gains on California trains

Amtrak’s ridership climb in California continues. In August, the national passenger railroad posted increases on all three of its trains in the state.

The Pacific Surfliner — which operates 12 daily round trips between San Diego and Los Angeles, with five trips to Santa Barbara and two to San Luis Obispo — carried a monthly record 269,483 passengers, a 5.6 percent increase compared with August 2004.

Operating four daily round trips between Bakersfield and Oakland, and two between Bakersfield and Sacrament, the San Joaquin carried 69,983 passengers, a 4.4 percent rise compared with the same 2004 period.

Finally, the Capitol Corridor, which operates 12 daily round trips between Sacramento and the bay area, carried 108,225 passengers, a 6.4 percent increase compared with August 2004.

California’s intercity trains are operated under a partnership between Amtrak and the California Department of Transportation.
