Cubic Transportation Systems Ltd. recently installed electronic gating systems at three United Kingdom rail stations on ScotRail Railways Ltd.’s Glasgow-to-Edinburgh line.

The gates were installed at Glasgow’s Queen Street station, and Edinburgh’s Haymarket and Waverly stations because the facilities have high passenger volumes, according to a prepared statement.

Under a $3 million contract, Cubic designed and installed 47 walkways and associated control equipment. The supplier also obtained a one-year, $365,000 contract from ScotRail to maintain the gates.

The gates will increase passenger security and control passenger flow on the busy route, and help track passenger volume and peak traffic times, railroad officials said.

The system features Cubic’s Universal Ticket Transport, designed to magnetically read and encode a variety of tickets. The program also can be used in ScotRail’s ticket vending machines, gates and booking office machines.
