Oregon's TriMet seeks funds for new light-rail line

Today, Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (TriMet) is submitting an application to the Federal Transportation Administration to secure federal funds for the Interstate 205 light-rail project.

The 6.5-mile line will serve southeast Portland and Clackamas County. Trains will connect with existing MAX tracks at Gateway Transit Center and then travel to downtown Portland.

TriMet currently is conducting preliminary engineering for the project. On Sept. 20, the agency will hold an open house to provide general project information on the alignment and eight stations proposed along the route. Construction could begin in 2006, with service beginning in 2009.
