Yesterday, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) energized tracks along the Largo Town Center Metrorail extension, providing electricity to operate the authority’s heavy-rail cars.

Now, crews will begin testing communications and automatic train control systems to prepare for the $456 million extension’s year-end opening.

The 3.1-mile, two-station Blue Line extensions runs from the Addison Road-Seat Pleasant station to Largo Town Center with an intermediate station at Morgan Boulevard. The segment is the first extension to WMATA’s original 103-mile system.
