CTA to restructure fares Jan. 1

On Jan. 1, Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) will implement a new fare structure, which increases the basic fare from $1.50 to $1.75.

Basic fares can be paid in cash, or with a Transit Card or Chicago Card. Passengers can continue to receive a 10 percent bonus for every $10 of value added to a Chicago Card.

The cost of a transfer will be reduced from 30 cents to 25 cents; multi-day pass prices will not change. CTA will continue to offer reduced fares for children, students with CTA Student Riding Permits, seniors and disabled riders, but the fares will increase from 75 cents to 85 cents.

The new fare structure will enable CTA to maintain current service levels, according to a prepared statement.
