Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority restructures fares

Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) recently approved a new fare structure that would increase the basic subway fare from $1 to $1.25.

The fare hike will enable MBTA to improve service and safety, such as offering express service on the Fitchburg Commuter Rail Line, recruiting 10 police officers to patrol the system and hiring 15 additional conductors to help ensure fares are collected, according to a prepared statement.

Additional revenue also would enable MBTA to maintain existing service levels and fund a $2.8 billion capital improvement program, which includes rebuilding stations and installing automated fare-collection equipment.

The authority recently established a Rider Oversight Committee, which will meet with MBTA officials monthly to discuss customer service and service quality issues.
