The U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) Build America Bureau yesterday announced it provided the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) a $851.15 million loan for positive train control (PTC) implementation.

The loan was provided under the bureau’s Railroad Rehabilitation and Improvement Financing program.

MBTA will use the loan to  complete installation of PTC across its system and a complementary automatic train control system on the 170-mile North Side commuter-rail lines.

The authority also is expanding its fiber optic cable network to cover the entire MBTA commuter-rail signaling system.

Financial close for credit assistance is contingent upon the MBTA meeting all federal requirements for the project, USDOT officials said in a press release.
