Western Group names Astle GM of Oregon, Washington short lines

The Western Group has appointed Matt Astle as northwest regional general manager of the Oregon Eastern Railroad and Washington Eastern Railroad.

Astle has 15 years of railroad experience, most recently serving as associate vice president of safety, compliance and human resources for all Western Group affiliated operations. In his new role, he will oversee freight operations, working with existing shipper customers as well as pursuing future business.

Astle brings to the job extensive knowledge of railroad compliance programs and regulations, which will continue to build positive relationships with federal and state regulators as well as current and future customers, said Western Group Chief Operating Officer Bruce Carswell in a press release.

"His proven track record of building cross-functional, and collaborative efforts within the Western Group organization is a strong part of his experience that will further strengthen these two rail lines," Carswell said.

Oregon Eastern Railroad is based in Vale, Oregon, and the Washington Eastern Railroad is based in Medical Lake, Washington. Combined, the short lines serve more than a dozen customers, moving products ranging from grains and diatomaceous earth to manufactured goods.
