The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (SDMTS) has named Al Stiehler director of transit security and passenger safety.

Stiehler, who starts his new duties on Jan. 18, most recently was chief of field operations at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) in New York City.

At SDMTS, he will oversee 64 code compliance inspectors and 158 contracted security officers responsible for patroling 54 stations and three rail lines, agency officials said in a press release.

In addition to his work at MTA, Stiehler spent 30 years in law enforcement at New Jersey Transit, including as deputy chief of police and field operations.

Stiehler succeeds Manny Guaderrama, who retired in August 2020.
