Port Everglades has named Michael Vanderbeek director of business development. He will be responsible for developing marketing and sales strategies to generate additional containerized cargo and cruise business for the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood, Fla., port.

Vanderbeek most recently was manager of business development for the Port of Long Beach, Calif., where he helped identify new market opportunities that facilitated more than $86 million in new trade, port officials said in a prepared statement. Vanderbeek previously was the Long Beach port’s manager of strategic planning.

“Michael’s demonstrated leadership skills, knowledge of international trade and multi-lingual communication abilities made him the top choice to lead the Business Development Division,” said Port Everglades Chief Executive Officer and Director Steven Cernak.

The port plans to soon launch construction on a 42-acre intermodal container transfer facility. To be completed by mid-2014, the $72 million facility will be served by Florida East Coast Railway L.L.C.
