The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials' (AASHTO) board has elected Russell McMurry, commissioner of the Georgia Department of Transportation, as the association's 2025-2026 president.

McMurray was elected at AASHTO's 2025 Annual Meeting held last week in Salt Lake City. He joined the Georgia DOT as an engineering intern in 1990. He served as chief engineer and in a variety of other roles before being then-Gov. Nathan Deal appointed him the DOT's planning director. Georgia's State Transportation Board appointed McMurry as Georgia DOT’s commissioner in 2015.

McMurray previously served as AASHTO’s treasurer for seven years, as well as on its Council on Highways and Streets. He also chaired its Transportation Policy Forum and the Strategic Management Committee.

“AASHTO has been instrumental throughout my career, and I’m honored to serve as its president,” McMurry said in a press release. “State DOTs are essential to delivering a safe, efficient, multimodal transportation system, and I’m committed to supporting that work — especially as we prepare for the next federal surface transportation reauthorization."

At its annual meeting, the AASHTO board also selected Marc Williams, executive director of the Texas Department of Transportation, as its 2025-2026 vice president.
