Vermont Rail System CMO Martin retires

Vermont Rail System (VRS) has announced that Chief Mechanical Officer Paul Martin will retire today after 42 years of service.

Martin began his career as a carman with the Vermont Railway on April 27, 1972, and later held a variety of positions, including yard engineer, shop foreman and signal maintainer.

Starting in 1984 — and for the next 30 years — Martin was responsible for keeping the company's growing fleet of locomotives pulling freight, VRS officials said in a retirement announcement. As superintendent of motive power and then CMO, he managed the fleet of GP-9, GP-18, GP-38 and GP-40 units.

"With growing demand on the roster, his skills were challenged and proved often," VRS officials said. "He will be missed."

VRS owns and operates the Clarendon & Pittsford Railroad, Green Mountain Railroad Corp., New York & Ogdensburg Railway, Vermont Railway and Washington County Railroad.
