WMATA appoints Requa acting GM to succeed Tangherlini

On Friday, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) board appointed Jack Requa acting general manager to succeed Dan Tangherlini, who has accepted a position as city administrator for the District of Columbia if Democratic mayoral candidate Adrian Fenty is elected next month.

Since 1998, Requa has served as WMATA’s chief operating officer for bus service. He previously served as director of bus service for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, and held senior management positions with transit agencies in Houston, St. Louis, Everett, Wash., and Saudi Arabia.

Tangherlini plans to step down as interim GM Nov. 5, but will serve in an advisory capacity through Nov. 17 to assist with the transition. He has served in the position since February, when Richard White left the agency after serving more than nine years in the top post.

The authority’s board will continue to conduct a national search for a permanent general manager.
