Kristine Storm

Kristine Storm [AGE 39]

Assistant Vice President, Purchasing
Genesee & Wyoming Inc.

Education: Flagler College, B.A. in business administration, accounting; University of North Florida, M.B.A.

Career highlights: Storm began her career in finance and accounting for the public and private sectors. She moved to Florida East Coast Railway (FEC) to develop a process to comply with Sarbanes-Oxley, then moved into procurement at FEC. Her next stops were at RailAmerica Inc., where she served in a procurement role, and then on to Genesee & Wyoming.

Why rail? "I was looking for a career change where I could bring my financial and accounting expertise and make a positive impact. It was sheer luck and good fortune that FEC needed assistance in this particular area."

Making a difference in rail transportation by ... "bringing an innovative and strategic approach to the industry that supersedes the status quo on how railroads have typically conducted business. It's important to retain the granule level of detail while keeping the big picture in perspective."

Five-year goal: "Continue my growth in the railroad industry, bringing value at a senior management role."

Active in: American Railway Engineering and Maintenance Association; Railway Supply Institute; Railway Systems Suppliers Inc.; National Railroad Construction and Maintenance Association; Railway Tie Association; American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association; Teens-in-Flight; Sea Turtle Patrol; Church Children Program

Her philosophy: Maintain a work-life balance by knowing what's important at any given time; always act ethically and with integrity; practice teamwork; get great results with commitment, dedication and hard work; learn from your mistakes.

Interesting fact: She's an avid offshore fishing enthusiast. Her best catch? A 200-pound Pacific sailfish.

Nominator's observation: "Her depth of knowledge makes her a tough negotiator, but always fair." — Raymond Lambert, Unitrac Railroad Materials
