The Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) and the city of San Clemente, California, on Oct. 9 marked the completion of a $93 million project intended to protect a section of the Los Angeles–San Diego–San Luis Obispo (LOSSAN) Rail Corridor from coastal erosion.
The corridor carries Metrolink and Amtrak passenger trains, freight and military transportation through San Clemente. OCTA started the Mariposa Point coastal protection project in September 2025 following years of erosion challenges that have disrupted rail service and public access to a trackside pedestrian trail, OCTA officials said in a press release.
OCTA constructed a nearly 1,400-foot catchment wall designed to protect the railroad track from falling rocks, soil and debris from the adjacent coastal bluff at Mariposa Point. The agency also improved and rebuilt a pedestrian bridge that was destroyed by falling debris in January 2024.
The Mariposa Point project is one part of OCTA's broader efforts to protect the rail corridor while planning for the future.
